1997 Neon highline with auto trans and 56,000 miles.

Today, out of nowhere i start the car and then the shifter wouldn't move from park. After a few minutes of wiggling it, i finally got it into reverse and moved it to the street.

Here's what i've found after taking the center console out: The button only works 1 out of about 50 times to get the car out of Park. It seems that the small rod that sticks out the side of the gear shifter shaft isn't going down low enough to allow it to pull back into gear. The same little bar also seems to be responsible for the key being stuck in the ignition cylinder. If i manually push/pull it, then i can get the key out and get the car into gear but that's the only way. I've looked at the procedure for adjusting the shift interlock cable and even tried to adjust it but it didn't seem to do anything at all.

What i'm wondering is if the spring inside the shifter shaft can go bad? If so, where can i get a new one and how much are they?

Also, does the shift knob come off or is it all part of the same assembly?

Junkyard time. Get another shifter, that shaft is likely bent causing the sticking. Make sure you adjust the cable to the ignition switch correctly.

Taking the knob off is easy. Look under the button and you will see a hole. An allen wrench goes in there to loosen a set screw. Once it's loose, just pull off the knob. It's a metric size allen wrench, not sure of the exact one.

Alright cool. That maks sense that it's somehow bent, it's got to be just a very small bend though because it "looks" fine.

Any chance i can get the part new anywhere? Just do to the yards only being open while i'm at work and it's freezing outside here in chicago.

I had the same problem with one of my Neons. Previous owner must have used a lot of force and bent the shaft slightly. If that cable isn't adjusted correctly, same thing can happen.
All the local self service junkyards are open on Saturday and Sunday. U-Pull-It in Aurora and Blue Island, PickNPull in Wadsworth and Summit, and LKQ in Rockford. Google those to get their hours. Used will be cheaper than new.

Thanks for all that info, it was just what i was looking for. I messed around with the cable and it's definatley not the issue. Not sure how it bent as the Neon is my mother's car and she's not the type to put any force on anything, lol.

Hopefully it warms up a little by saturday and i'll start at the local places first and work my way out until i find one.

Any idea what tools i'm going to need besides an allen key, screwdriver, and 8mm socket?

If you take yours apart first, you'll know exactly what you'll need. However, I never go to the junkyard without extra tools because you never know what else you'll see there that you just gotta have.

True, but the cars still be used and i want to be sure i have the part before i take it apart. Yeah, i'll probably make a day of it at the yard since i'll have to bundle up, drive there, pack up some tools, etc... Just been waiting for spring before i hit the yards for my "want list".

FIXED. Got the shift rod assembly from the local scrapyard for $10. Seems the top part of the rod itself was broken when i pulled the shift knob off. The little part that the metal ball sits inside just fell out as it was broken right at the top of the metal part of the shaft.

The Summit U-Pull still have half-off Wednesdays? I went last summer for some stuff I really needed and the rest (aurora and wadsworth) discontinued 50% Wednesdays :(

I don't know about the Summit one but there's a U-pull-it on North Ave and Cicero Ave. that still has half off wednesdays.

Check this one out at Victory in Bensenville, they always have a high turn over rate on cars too so pretty easy to find what you need. $49 for all the parts you can carry on those special days they have now
