Was driving my car home after weekend at 120km/h when it starts to lose power and I had to floor it to keep it up. It slowed down and eventually died.

Looked at it then,

The bottom of the Catilictic converter was glowing bright red!!

and engine shook bad on idle but steadied out when higher then 2000rpms.

Did manage to drive it home after letting it cool.

Today I went to fix it and I had reason to believe that the muffler was plugged and that was the problem but took that off and it is still not running well, although the shaking is less.

The car spits out these codes.

12 - Battery Disconnected (Always gives me this)

21 - O2 sensor (my upstream O2 sensor has had a wiring problem I'm 90% sure because this code is on about 5% of the time i drive)

43 - Misfire (Never got this before)

I think that something must be wrong with my Cat and that looks like a pretty hard fix to me.

Suggestions.?

You are thinking about this from the wrong direction. Your catalytic converter was so hot because un-burnt fuel/air from the misfire was being dumped into it.

If you are getting a battery disconnected code all the time and you haven't disconnected the battery in ~15 start cycles then you have a bad connection, either at the terminals or the cables (and grounds!) have been corroded. If the corrosion is severe enough the ignition coil cannot get the proper voltage supply it needs then it can't generate a spark at the spark plug to ignite the fuel/air mixture and you get a misfire.

The O2 sensor code may be a hint to where the wiring problem is that is dropping the 12v supply.

Addendum: It is possible that if this misfire went on long enough that the catalytic converter has become clogged up with soot from burning unspent fuel, but that's a bridge further down the road. First solve your misfire.

Okay.

I will try to get more volts today (my battery has given me problems before). See if that helps.

Thanks,

I thought it was to, but my Chrysler FSM says 15 while the OBD II book says 50. Since the 'key dance' codes aren't OBD II codes but Chrysler codes I guess they might be different.

Some of the codes take 50 cycles (starts) to clear, while others take fewer cycles to clear. That is if no one clears the codes from the pcm's memory. The pcm determines when to clear codes, but it is usually on average, 3 cycles.

Spark plug number 2 is soaked in oil.

This could be the problem.

valve cover tube seals. Would require removal of valve cover and replacement of seals.

I been trying to figure out a similar problem. All four of mine leak a bit, I fixed the seals but they still leak some.

I've also taken a piece of 2x4 and lightly taped the tubes down to try to stop the oil but I'm still getting some. Hopefully you fix your oil leak.

I'm getting the misfire code too, I'm thinking if I can stop the oil it should fix the misfire. You should try getting the P codes for the misfire to see if it's any particular cylinder. My guess would be that #2 cylinder. :dunno:

Could be leaky valve seals or gone piston rings.....but that is still something that could be caused by leaky plug seals and I would bank on it being that way well before the other two lol. Even if it turned out to be something else do yourself a favor and replace the spark plug seals if you cant determined the cause for sure.

Re-seated tube number 2.

changed tube seals in # 2 and 3. (others looked good and the seals i got were being a pain in the butt so didn't change what wasn't broke)

Changed all of the spark plugs.

CAR RUNS GREAT!

clamped muffler on again.
