I'm doing a mechanical tensioner conversion on my 97 sohc . I already read up about the swap and obtained a inner timing cover with the proper holes for the tensioner. I followed all instructions on the timing belt installation. when I go to put the belt on the last pully ( the tensioner) , it dosent fit. It looks to have about. 1/4-3/8 of a inch to go to reach the pully and just won't stretch over to it. Any ideas? I am using gates belt #t245.

You have the slack on the wrong side. You can try loosening the two tensioner mounting bolts or even removing them. Once the belt is over the edge, you should be able to replace and or tighten the two mounting bolts.
