Hi all,

Just went with my wife's 2003 Dodge Neon to a shop and the mechanic found that the lower control arm bushings in the front are almost gone. They quoted $483 for the replacement, including a 4-wheel alignment. I find this pretty high and want an opinion on how much this should usually cost. Also, do they need to be replaced in pairs (both sides) at a time ? Does it need a 4-wheel alignment after this replacement ?

I am sceptical about the quoted price because I googled this and found to be a 1-hour job with the new bushings cost of around $20. Also, the mechanic charged me $183 for replacing a $10 leaking evap hose at the vapor canister and tightening the alternator belt... so I don't trust them anymore.

Thank you !

its fairly easy job, a torch helps melt the old ones out, theres no way id pay that much to get them changed, and i dont know the law down there but up here in wisconsin if a mechanic does a repair that wasnt pre aproved the shop hasto cover the cost. if you have did anything beyond changing your oil on the car you should be able to change the control arm bushings, if you were closer to me id do it for $100, oh and you shouldnt need an alignment after changing them if it wasnt off before they went bad

Thanks, twitchy_69 ! I'll keep shopping around, it's very hard to find an honest mechanic these days... Anybody know one in Northern VA ?

Ive done this repair myself before. I think best thing you can do is remove the arms yourself, bring to shop and have them press them in. Go home and reinstall. My local shop charged me 20 bucks and took about and hour. After any suspension changes you should at least get your alignment checked. Doesn't hurt to know. If you do need one you'll already be there. If not, be glad you have peace of mind.

Yup with hand tools it took me about 4 hours to get both vertical and horizontal bushings in. BTW burning bushings is fun :)

My dealer put mine in for $110 with me bringing my bushings in. And the control arms are static so you don't need an alignment.

Its not that hard to do yourself BUT you do need a press to do the job.
