Well here is what I did. Took a 3.94 case, pulled both shafts out, cleaned it very nicely, put in new end bearings, new seals etc. Took everything out of the 3.55 case and put it in the 3.94 case. Because the 3.55 case had some metal in the bottom of it. Well everything was going great, had the correct shim and all, diff had a turning torque of 6-10 inch lbs. But the problems start with the ring gear! :ireful: Put the ring gear on, go to put the case together.. and we have problems. It's almost like the ring gear is too big.. i have no clue. I even tried a different diff. same problem. I spent an hours trying to figure it out.. just couldnt get it. on top of that my 15$ of gasket maker is drying. :ireful:

any ideas?

thanks
sean

Maybe i am confooosed too, but i'll try to help....

I *thought* that the 3.55 ring gear, and 3.94 ring gear, are "particular" to the case they are going into ? (Meaning cases are different)

I am certain that someone else will either confirm that I am correct, or that i am a total dufus......

common problem.
slightly tilt the ring gear away from the pinion as you drop the gearbox down.
if you don't, the ring will hit the pinion (as in your case).
you'll need to probably jiggle the gearbox to get it to drop.
make sure the 3 or 4 shafts are lined up.

****you should really be using anaerobic sealer.

Glad to know that I am wrong (or a dufus) in this instance.

I do use anerobic sealant.. thats what the mopar gasket maker is, comes in a tube.. its red. So youre saying drop the gearbox down onto the bellhousing? I was doing it the opposite way.. bellhousing down onto gearbox. In order for the shafts to line up perfect i gotta use a little screw driver on one of them.. but then she drops down. This was such a pita yesturday..

So what actually is the pinion that it is hitting, I dont know too much about the gears and all.. only what I had to work on. Here is how i tried this.
Image

I know its a leaf spring juice load of sealant.. but my last case leaked a bit so i wasnt taking any chances.. i hate leaks.

Btw i took off the output shaft bearing and put it on the bellhousing holding it in place with grease.. some guys do that method and it stays there. I'll try again... eh.

Yes lay the bellhousing down, face down then lay the diff in place with the cage bearing. Pack the bearing with grease so the bearing dont fall forward while installing the case.
once you get the tranny sitting over the bellhousing then wigle the shifters and a long small flat head works perfect to guide them inplace.

ok .. still no go. I just looked and the ring gear that i checked again was from a 3.94.. i just checked the ring gear from the 3.55 and im pretty sure there IS a difference. I dont have a dial big enough to measure the diameters.. but i put a piece of wire around them to measure em.. and the 3.94 ring gear.. IS bigger then the 3.55 ring gear by enough to f this whole thing up. I'm gunna swap the ring gears and i betcha she falls into place. :ireful:  worse part of the build right here.. hands are pink and black from grease so is everything around me hah. man

yes it is  like i said i cannot stand a leak. I put a good bit on it last time and it leaked a tiny tiny bit.. so none of that anymore.

Put on the 3.55 ring gear for the 3.55 gear set up. Fits like a glove, first try, popped right in place.

So there IS a difference...... I just couldn't remember what it was. I guess I am 'partially' vindicated.

I don't *think* the extra (excess?) sealer is going to hurt anything.....

it can't be drying, it only dries in the absence of air/oxygen.

i typically just run a thin bead b/c once sealed, it's extremely thin (zero clearance).

extra sealant shouldn't matter (except it's expensive), it should all squeeze in/out once torqued down.
wipe off the excess once done, it not, it'll catch every piece of dirt/grime that comes in contact with.

It can dry in the absence of air, but not only in the absence of air. It's actually cured in the presence of metal... metal ions cause the reaction that cures it.

correct, i was referring more to his situation, and that he has it applied to the gearbox or bellhousing and that it won't dry just sitting there.

okkk, maybe vitor or someone else can chime in here.

Car will not go into reverse.. everything else checks out great. Im thinking i used the reverse gear from my 3.94 trans instead of the one out of the 3.55 trans.. I didnt even think they were different? Are they different? Maybe i did something wrong..

thanks

sean

Reverse is the same between 3.94 and 3.55 the gear engages first ifrst gear. There is some weird linkage and levers to get it to do that. You probably missed one or put something in wrong when you swapped everything over.

If you take it apart again, you can get reverse to engage with the belhousing off to see if you got everything right.

yeh i know i didnt forget that little black washer.. hmm i thought i did it all right... but guess not.

Damn thing still spins all of 3rd and the car is all over the road. The 3.55 helped but not enough ha. Atleast i'll have better mpg for cruise. Its SOOO smooth though. The trans feels crisp.. just when i throw it in reverse it wont go and you can hear something smacking.. not a bad sound, just like metal hitting metal in a nice way

You are going to have to search for some pics showing the bellhousing off of known good transmissions and do a comparison. If you post some pics of what you are seeing there might be some here that can visually tell you whats wrong.

Until we see it, we really don't know what to say.

hmm, hard to say.. things look to be in the same spot

Pic of my trans with no reverse

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d196/ ... c002-3.jpg

"Easy thing to check, look into the case like in your picture, the reverse gear is already contacting the input shaft, make sure it also is seated on the output shaft, if it is, you did it right. If it is not, time to tear down the output shaft to swap the hubs direction."

thats what drakito told me.. hard to comprehend but i'll have to do my research when i get off work.

ok i'll have pics soon but check this weird thing out.. I was looking below the input shaft at the small straight cut gear.. where it matches the other straight cut gear on the output shaft.. and they dont even touch.. WEIRD

I have another gear set laying around from the 3.55 and I put those together to see and its the same thing.. I KNOW the reverse set up is all straight cut gears, what the hell is the point of the straight cut gears if none of them ever touch, I know the straight cut gears can only get along with STRAIGHT cut gears and not any other ones. RAHHH i need a master mtx neon expert. I pulled the gear sets out, put them back in and no reverse.. really what could have happened, thats weird, i have all 5 gears and no reverse, so weird

Sorry brotha, but with race season coming into play, many of us are busy beavers nowadays. I just got back to this thread now :pardon:

I didn't miss it, check my PM's to you again. Your link was broken when you originally typed to me, so I was going off of what you had said to me. My original answer was based on the synchro hub ring, as you implied you had done a Full rebuild of both shafts. Here is my PM to you if you didn't see it.

Quote:
Yup its in backwards and easy to fix, the single 13mm bolt on the side of the case holds the reverse gear idler shaft in, you can yank it out and flip the gear very quickly. It should look like this:

I'm glad you got it fixed!

of course it would be too good to be true, i have 3 shims laying around small medium large, all are too small, even stacking 2 of them i have like 10-12 with a 15 inch lb spike. too tight. :nea:

getten to be a pro with seperating this case and putting it back together wow, but I got the larger shim i had to work.

it helps when u tighten down the whole case rather then a few bolts
