If your head has the press in style, just stick with them. Some heads came from the factory with all them threaded already. My head was one of them. I'm not sure if it was certain years or why they only did some though.

Ah, okay. . . I was thinking they looked like 1/4" NPT would be just fine, but of course I can't find my 1/4" NPT tap, and therefore won't ever see it again until I buy another one. But then I'll have two, which is nice.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll start looking for some of these press in plugs. Is there any trick to ensuring they don't leak?

Just measure the hole in the head, I use a common standard freeze plug. (can't remember exact size off the top of my head). I use the same gasket maker on them as I do between the bedplate. Don't go crazy on the amount, a thin layer on the plug will do.

Awesome, thanks again! Standard plug plus green stuff it is.
Back on topic then, when is the next outing for your car?

I bought a new 5-bar map for the boost controller so it will read properly now. I need to get on the dyno and get it all setup properly. Ounce I do it's time for more track time.
I have an old set of konis coming to get sent out for revalving. Cutting the perch off and running coilover sleeves and 2.5" springs. Hope to get those on before season end.
Also been looking into tranny options. I'm going to try to get a 1.95 2nd gear with early 3.94 first and fourth. Also want to try to get a 4.12 fd.
More track time is the most important thing right now though. (after figuring out the boost controller)

I like the idler pulley idea. SAABs, like my 9000, have 'em. But where would you put it?

4.12 will put my mph at 156@9100 in fourth. Downside is first will be pretty damn short. Maybe try leaving in second?
I haven't looked into the idler idea yet, so I'm not quite sure where I could put it yet.

Oh, I new the diff. between HDs and non-HDs, It just sounded like there was another version of a non-HD that I didint know about. Like maybe there was a differance between 95's and 96-up stuff...I guess not.

some other pictures from the shootout. you can see the hood bulging letting air out from under it. this is a serious problem im looking into more. im going to try blocking off the large holes in the bumper with duct tape at the track and see if helps any. also im going to looking into ways to help vent the air out from the engine bay in a more controlled fashion.....possibly out the cowl area. did this tonight. took an old tensioner and cut and welding on it until i could get the two lowest alt. bracket bolts to hold it in. then drilled and tapped to use the big freakin bolt mod, bro. im going to switch the pulley out to a 2.4 idler, as i had to space this one out about a 1/2" to get it centered better on the belt. we will soon find out if its enough to keep it on.

If I understand correctly, you need vents just behind the upper core support area where it's a low pressure area over the apex of the hood (Bernoulli Effect). The cowl area is actually supposed to be a high pressure area where you let air IN to the area under the hood. . . I.e. a bad place to try and let air out from under your hood.

(cant remember which magazine, but its an awesome read) i need to get a stock steel hood and start cutting holes i think

Put some hot-rod louvers in the middle of the hood. I've always wanted to do something like that on my cars. :) Note where the old TurboDodge's had their hood vents at back in the early 80's (they were removed in the late '80's thanks to bean counters trying to save money). I have the hood from an '84 Daytona with the great big vent in it, it's eventually getting combined with the hood on my van, if only to let the heat out on hot days and in parking lots, but I know those vents help with top speeds as well.

I still believe on those cars, the ones in the rear are for air induction while the ones closer to the front are for escape. Could be wrong though. I'll take the hood off your hands since it doesn't look to be working for you. Just drop it on by

Id say some kind of an air-dam is in order, keep whatever air is going under the car/engine compartment to a minimum thus creating somewhat of a vacuum on the underside of the car/hood instead of pressure. It should help with traction at speed as well (if you are getting wheel spin ) Id also try to block off everything you can as far as grille/bumper openings go (with the exception of the intercooler area)

The air coming up over the rise at the front of the hood is high speed air, and high speed air is low pressure air (Bernoulli). Therefore if you make your escape louvers, holes, whatever as shown about a third of the way back on the hood as shown in the diagram, it should exhaust the pressure out from your engine compartment. That should in theory assist in beneficial air flow through your intercooler and radiator too.

I think VIS makes a CF for the 1st gen with vents there, but I think it's a "SOHC only" hood, though I had a similar one on my old car when it was DOHC. I don't think mine had the vents, but it was recessed there and holes could have easily been cut.
I'll look for a pic of one. I think eBay has them.

DOHC5spd2Dr wrote: I can get youa hood to hack up.... I'd hack a couple of slots in the appropriate areas and probably break a little louver upward at the leading edges of them. I think that would be an awesome first test. And X3 on the price and "fugly" comments. I'd say that since you have the front pinned already it would be super simple to take whatever hacked up hood you end up liking for function and pulling a fiberglass/carbon (or if you're really high tech kevlar/carbon) skin off of it for your final lightweight piece.

who would have thought making 575whp 9 pulls in a row could be so aggravating? was on the dyno for an hour tonight trying to get this msd boost controller figured out. was doing exactly what the instructions said to for my scenario, but made no progress. still having 3psi variance during a pull and the pwm of the noids are maxing out in either direction. only thing i could actually change was the rate of gain. even tried hooking the noids up different with no success. looks like im ditching it and going a different route. anyone interested in giving it a shot? i will make you a KILLER deal on it,brand new AEM 5-bar map sensor included, ready to rock. pm me
