I didnt know where to post this so I posted it here

I have an external voltage regulator (I run a full standalone MS setup) and it ALWAYS dies every two months...

Right now if I log the car, voltage rises without control... 16... 17... 18 volts...

This happens almost exactly every 2 months and I dont want it to happen again

what could be happening?

Something is wired wrong, or your alt has an occasional internal short..
I'd replace the alt, that's cheap enough to do with a junkyard one, or maybe you have spares.. Then run new wires to and from it.. The two small wires, one goes to ignition switched power, one goes to the green on the regulator. The blue on the regulator also goes to ignition switched power. Make sure the voltage regulator is bolted securely to a good ground, it NEEDS that ground to run the alternator, I usually grind the paint off the metal where it makes contact with the car.

I have to chime in here i had the same problem replaced it every 2 months for about a year before i started looking into other ideas. i tried everything and had no luck at all. i finally settled on making a custom bracket to hold a chevy 350 alternator simple 12+ off to the battery and one 12+ consistant and one that i put a switch on off that line to turn on and off the alt since hardwiring the other wire killed the battery after 2 days of not driving. wouldnt every think of going back to a neon alt even if you dont have access to the tools to make one its worth finding someone to help if you ever have to replace it the alt brand new without a core is like 54 bucks at advance. 2 problems with that was the custom bracket and having a core pulley to switch out with the stock v belt that comes on it.

On this same subject..

Has anyone had any luck (or even tried) the way over priced alt from Napa? It has an internal voltage regulator and is a direct replacement for the neon.

bad link.
how can a voltage regulator for a Neon be a "direct replacement" since the OEM regulator is inside the PCM? use your link and get a picture of what they claim fits?

Link goes to NAPA's website for the part number # BSH AL6530X
All I did was search there website for a 98 dodge neon DOHC and it gives this alt as one of the options. It says it has an internal voltage regulator. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of or maybe tried this.

Has internal rectifier, not regulator.
