Something I have wanted to do is make an intrepid rwd with a tranny from a charger. I wonder how hard that would be.

All the 3.0 needs is some forged pistons and it will handle just about anything you throw at it. All 6gxx series mitsu engines have forged rods from the factory. Also, a 3.0 5 speed shadow can quite easily run 14's with bolt ons, and the neon is lighter. I think this swap is great, because everyone hates on it.

That's pretty cool. I seem to remember a few 3.0l builds at turbododge.com which were impressive.

how about a new 4.0L with the strat R/T trans and a pair of turbos...........Instantly twice the displacement ......then turbos! it would be cool to fit it all under the hood of a base neon but I doubt it

someone needs to try it!

Keep the funky intrepid transmission, and make it a mid engine RWD...

The only thing impressive was how many times the engine didn't work after dumping metric tons of money into a one off custom setup. That first one must have come back out of the car and gone back to the machine shop a full 6 times before they finally got it to even run right. In the end, it dyno'd 500hp.. Yeah, great for a 150hp 3.0 motor.. But again, the 2.4 can beat that with less work/custom parts/money. And still get better gas mileage because of it's lower displacement.

And then he went and picked up a junkyard 3.0 for less than 100$, threw all the turbo stuff on it, put some e85 in the tank, ran 11's with stock electronics.

It's a load of crap. You can be/do anything on the internet. Doesn't make it real.

I'll give the guy big props on the swap!

I think the negativity is a reflection of peoples' disappointment that something that sounds like such a cool idea is just not real fast. The 4-bangers are kind of ridiculous in terms of big power from a small package.

I do like the heck out of that duster. I wish they would have turned down the music in the mix when they fired it up. Sounded like it might have had a really cool sounding exhaust note.

So many negative Nancies.

3.0l looks to make 130-140hp in the minivan. That plus an automatic seems very decent. I can't remember if anyone has taken a *stock* 2.4/auto in a neon, down the 1/4 mile.

He didn't even list the rest of the time slip, the elevation of the track or the conditions, but everyone is jumping all over it running 16.35. I've seen countless neons at the track and (mostly) on here that should be much, much faster. But alas, they aren't.

I'm sure it wouldn't take much more than tires and a few bolt ons to get into the 14s, but it doesn't sound like the owner cares about focusing on time slips.

Good points in here.

True, it doesn't sound like the owner is trying to maximize his 1/4mi. times.
Heck, in OUR hands, we'd have a better chance of turning it into a terror.

HOWEVER, since this car is obviously *very experimental*, it is just a 'starting point'.
There is room for improvement.

Now, dealing with a 'hybrid' car like this, opens up new possibilities..... but also opens up new problems.
What bolt ons are available ?? What bolt-ons will fit ?? What bolt-ons won't fit ?? What / How to do engine management ??

Obviously, MPG will go down. (compared to a 4-cylinder)
I'm sure handling will be affected, too..... most likely in a negative way.... there goes the crisp handling of the Neon.
On the plus side, torque would go up (but some of that will probably be offset by weight gain.)

The big challenge it to do a swap like this, without affecting the integrity of the entire vehicle.
It may improve the car. It also could be a step backwards if not done properly.
Sure, with torches and fabrication, it would be possible to put a 440 V-8 into a Neon as well..... but that would require so much modification, it would be like ending up with a different car.
A Neon with a 440 swap, would end up driving / feeling like an old A-body Dart with a big-block, but with rack and pinion instead, and worse weight distribution. :pardon:

I give kudos to the owner, for making this V-6 swap actually run AND drive in a Neon. That's just the starting point !!
Now comes the hard part..... getting it to run better, in a car that was never designed for a larger engine in the first place.

- Nick

v6 went 15.82@84mph. i would like to see a stock auto neon run that kind of time. motor has 200,000 miles on it. like stated before, not purpose built for drag racing. just having some fun.

Man, I love the simplicity of 4-bangers. Looking at this car and thinking about working on it makes me tired. That, or working on 4-bangers has made me lazy. . . . .
