Our Lemons effort at Buttonwillow paid off with a major trophy "The Least Horrible Yank Tank" given to the American Car that sucks the least (i.e. top American finisher). See: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=343531 We managed to finish 8th overall. Although we built for durability and reliability, and committed to refrain from beating the car to death on the track, we turned in some decent lap times. There were many cars that were much faster on the straights, but we apparently were able to out corner most of them, so we ended up holding our own. We had two pit crew members who were designated wrenches. In the end, they had very little to do.

so when i asked you guys what you'd done to the car and you told me 'just swaybars' i thought you were pulling my leg. (Neither Don nor I believed it) But after reading the thread you posted it turns out it might have been true! Excellent job out there. It was great to see you guys turning great lap times in the only neon on the track. All of my pictures from Lemons that day~Mookie

Our high-tech, top secret suspension setup:
* stock ACR Arvin struts * Mopar Highrate springs * Prothane urethane front lower control arm bushings * stock 20mm front swaybar w/stock rubber bushings * stock 16mm rear swaybar w/stock rubber bushings * bent rear tension stuts (by crew dude Boyd) for tire clearance * 225/45R15 Hankook RS2 on 15x7 (30mm offset) Fiero wheels
That's it, and it's in our budget! We concentrated on keeping the car mostly stock and ran a setup that has been known to work.
Craig: The Chia Neon guys from Detroit will be racing at Nelson Ledges. Maybe they would be interested in your help?

It was great to see you guys turning great lap times in the only neon on the track. All of my pictures from Lemons that day~Mookie There was another Neon there on Friday... I want to say 4 door with DOHC. Looked pretty good, except IMHO the 17" wheels they were going to run were too heavy, and thus, not likely to offer any distinct advantage. In any event, they took the car out for a practice run on Friday morning... I saw them being towed in a short while later. Sometime later, I wandered over to their pit spot to ask what happened. Hood was up... didn't look good. Clutch had been thrown through the bell housing. Had them pull the valve cover... several rockers had been thrown off (although none appeared to be broken). They said they had lost compression in at least two cylinders. Later on they said they had several bent valves. Driver commented that he had over revved the engine by down shifting as he approached a turn. Do you think? We tried to convince them to make a bone yard run... felt they could get an engine, clutch, etc. that would allow them to make the race. Problem was they had destroyed the engine before going through tech, and thus, would have had to get the car back together before 5:00 p.m. when tech closed. No way that was going to happen... so they packed it up and went home, leaving us as the lone Neon team. TIP: Get car teched before going out. Like a few others ended up doing, this other Neon team could have worked most of the night if that's what was needed to get the car back together, and got at least some track time.

Craig: The Chia Neon guys from Detroit will be racing at Nelson Ledges. Maybe they would be interested in your help? ACR MAN forgot to mention our $7.50 front air dam, and our <$5 radiator shrouding... oh yeah, can't forget the clothers dryer exhaust vent hose ($??) that was used to vent the hot air from the interior heater core. (look close and you will see it going out the right rear window area.) We also got rid of PS... one less thing to cause problems. We anticipated very hot weather (105 to 110 during mid-August is not unusual at Buttonwillow), but it only got into the high 90's (possibly just above 100). Our cooling system worked great. No overheating at all... temp held at normal all day.
