srt4eh’s “LAST PROJECT” - War Machine 2.6L SOHC...yes you read that right.

Post by srt4eh » Tue Apr 14, 2020 2:46 pm

Thanks to Coronavirus 2020 I’ve got some time to build a project log. This 2002 Dodge Neon is likely one of the oldest unfinished builds in neon history. At this point I might be able to go pro in 2021.

Anyways - finishing up this car here in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I named it War Machine because I love Marvel and it seemed fitting for the amount of destruction it’s been through and how much of a beast I hope it will be.

Next post will give some background pictures as well as the link to read the SGT_Brad saga, how I came to have this car, and what I’ve done with it.

CAUTION! You have to go to the 2gn darkside to view this thread. Hopefully you brought some popcorn cuz the 27ish pages is one hell of a dramatic story.

So if you didn’t read the link I shared above...go back and read it. If you still won’t then I’ll give you a recap. 2.0.....to 2.2...blown up....blown up again....2.6....ruined wiring, etc and never finished.

Darrell did a number on this car and then a friend who said he could finish it let it rot in the sun and never touched it. SGT Brad just wanted someone to grab it who would finish it and give back a couple of the parts on it. I was the lucky recipient and have had a blast working on it. (I’ve also had some very frustrating times with it but that’s how it goes).

The MS in the car was a MS1 which I sold and bought the MS2 from dawm. Went through the harness and got it nice and fresh. Got everything looking nice and went to start it and bang...alternator decided to blow up. I also had some issues with a bad starter and some other frustrating odds and ends which caused me to lose focus and stop working on it. We moved from Alabama to Kentucky and it sat for a year while I deployed to Iraq. Since coming back I’ve put in a bunch of wrench time. Here’s some in between pics.

Glad to know this car has been, and is still receiving some love.

I recall the drama all too well, as it was unfolding in real time back then. It has been a very long road for this car.

CF fenders (going away eventually)
Is the body silver (PS2) or white? It's tough to tell from the lighting in the pics.

If PS2, I would sell my front fenders cheap, if you could get me a nice condition Deep Amethyst (PCN) driver side. Both are in good condition, driver side is a Mopar replacement fender. I thought it was an aftermarket one from when I got backed into, but the body shop actually used a Mopar part.

If it is PS2, and you are keeping it that color anyways.

Otherwise I will be getting the left fender painted in PCN, as my project is missing that fender. The CF fenders referenced for sale at the top of page 27 of SGT BRAD's PL are from the car that is my current project. He either sold off, or damaged one of the original fenders. (the driver door is not original) I'm guessing the CF fenders were the replacement part for body damage.

It’s a slight shade off of PS2. I had planned on getting new fenders painted PS2 with my front bumper but now I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m not a cf guy anymore. I like the hood and trunk but the fenders are a bit much.

Interesting to learn more about the car I know he got a lot of these cf pieces and the paint job because of hitting a deer.

Have you considered painting the CF fenders to match, (if they are in good enough shape)?

I doubt there is much weight savings, as the steel ones don't really weigh much, but CF will never rust.

I never really got into the CF look, but I would use a hood/trunk for weight reduction, and paint to match.

Maybe small bits, but a large surface, IDK, it never did it for me. If the paint is a darker color, then I guess it isn't too bad on the fenders, but on a lighter car, while the hood and or trunk isn't terrible, the fenders just don't seem to flow well, possibly because of the overall shape disrupts the body lines being in such contrast.

My issue with the fenders is two part...one they are terribly sun faded and the clear coat is destroyed. I could have them painted but I don’t like how they fit either.

That's what I was thinking, aside from the current appearance. For me, painting them would fix that, but it won't fix the fit. :/

So just got this in today to replace the windshield washer fluid reservoir as a coolant overflow lol. I’m going to see if I can mount it back near the stock location. We shall see tomorrow. I also have an oil catch can and 2000-2002 headlights coming in. Why 2000-2002 headlights? Well I’m planning on running a 2002 R/T bumper since my Grip Tuning bumper is still not done after 3 years. Time to just give up hope on that ever being done.

My favorite stock neon front fascia.

I wonder if there are any NIB export fronts left around? Those were a few hundred $ cheaper than the R/T ones new. The only difference is the side repeaters were not cut out, which depending on what look you are after, gives you some options.

I guess when you get too wrapped up in something, it's tough to let it go.

But man, to think if he had invested that money even semi wisely, he wouldn't have to worry about too much now. Even with the small downturn in the market.

Good ol' hindsight...

He makes pretty good money now making prosthetics which is why he was willing to let it go for nothing. I think the love of the build and neons was why he put so much into it. While you’re in the moment it doesn’t seem like much but looking back you can see the mass amounts of money invested lol

Exactly, they are huge.

I kind of chuckled at the comments in the old thread about how it was doing poorly on power in part, because it was SOHC. As if that head wouldn't flow as well as a DOHC.

I get stock to stock, but ported to that extreme, the number of cams in the head only influences what you can do with the power curve at that point.

In all honesty, I like the way my mildly ported Magnum head performed over the stock DOHC 2.0 I had before I went to the 2.4.

Agreed - I think this head will flow fine. I think the only reason I’d ever switch to DOHC is for the ease of utilizing SRT designed manifolds in the future.

Today I adjusted the passenger side sideskirts in preparation to install the lower moldings. I also got a glow key from Case. I’m feeling like getting a bunch of random keys made so I can choose the style depending on my mood lol.

I also got my headlights today.

I have no clue on what happened to the fog light blanks from my '01. Not sure if they are the same exact shape for the SE vs the ACR and R/T fogs anyways. I recall '02 fog lights being different than '00/'01, but not sure how that applied to the R/T fascia.

Edit:

5288835AA Front Fascia Plug, Left

Both are disco'ed.
One reasonable, the rest outrageous...

Can't say I took the time to read the 27 pages thread yet but I kinda get it was one road to hell with this thing.

Looking forward to follow this very wild and custom project man, good job ! :good:

Crystal Coakley has a set of the covers and they’re on the way to me. Got the trans swapped out and now I play the game of reassembling the car. Hopefully I can fire her up in a couple weeks :)

I'm actually excited to see how that 2.6 SOHC will run. I really wished I would have built my 2.4 SOHC All Motor years ago with JeffB when I had everything to do it. Good luck with everything and hope it all goes good

Enough said. I got the car back down on all 4 wheels yesterday. Hope to finish up the car shortly.

Pretty BOLD statement with the fog light delete covers.........

I sure hope you have more luck than the previous owner. I see where Cheyenne ran into problems with his engine again. It's seems as if every time he posted it was about fixing something that broke.....
My True Story:
My older sister/husband sent me a selfie of them taking a test ride in a newer Corvette. They posted, "Going for a joy ride in our "dream car"
I immediately posted back......" Why dream small, I can put you in the driver's seat of a neon for a fraction of the price".......

U-Pulls are like a box of Chocolates.......you never know what you're going to find...... ;)

Haha yeah. I’m hoping that I can fire her up shortly. I’ve got the interior back together and have all the wiring done.
